Update: This post contains products that are NOT cruelty-free and vegan because it was created before I made the switch. The beauty products that are ARE cruelty-free and vegan are: Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick, Urban Decay 24/7 Lip Pencil
Red lipstick is awesome! It is by far one of my favorite makeup looks. It looks great on everyone (with confidence!) and never goes out of style. It has been famously worn throughout the ages by iconic Hollywood stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Gwen Stefani and Taylor Swift. A red lip is the perfect way to switch up your look, add an extra pop to a boring outfit or to anything that just needs a simple pop of color! Red lips are bold and beautiful but can go wrong much easier than you may think. Follow my simple guidelines and you should be effortlessly rockin’ the red lip in no time!
Finding the Perfect Shade
I think the most important thing to keep in mind when wearing red lips is to find a shade that compliments your skin tone. Those with fairer skin may want to go with a brighter or more orange shade like NARS Heatwave. If you have darker skin or cool undertones you may want to go with a more blueish red like MAC Russian Red.
I would highly suggest going into Sephora / Ulta / MAC and trying on some different shades and tones to see what suits you. There are so many subtle and gorgeous differences in shades of red that it may take some searching to find the perfect color for you. (I hear MAC has some awesome lipstick.)
The shade I am pictured wearing is Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in the color “Mrs. Mia Wallace.” (Badass.) I paired it with their 24/7 Lip Pencil in the same shade. Unfortunately it has been discontinued but may be found online. It is a deep “blood red” with subtle cool undertones and a creamy shine.
Putting on Your Lipstick
If possible, I would seriously recommend using lipliner with your lipstick. Make sure that it is the exact same shade, because a slight difference can look super obvious with such a bright and bold color. If you cannot find the right liner, use a lip brush for easier application. I used an older version of this one from Sephora. If you only have a liner, you can apply it all over your lips for the same look as a lipstick, but with stronger staying power!
Before you apply, make sure your lips are exfoliated and dry. Do not apply chapstick or lip moisturizer right before your lipstick. It will prevent the lipstick from sticking and make it appear transparent on your lips.
If you have a lipliner, use it first! If you’ve ever tried to put on a bright lip color without liner you know it can get super difficult. If you don’t have a liner, use a thin lip brush to line your lips with the lipstick itself. If you are having trouble getting it to look right, drawn an “X” in the middle of your top lip, following your lip’s natural edges right below your cupid’s bow. Smudge the inside edges of the liner to blur any harsh lines.
I think the best way to get a pigmented opaque color is to apply your lipstick directly from the tube. Finish up by filling in hard to reach areas with a lip brush and then blending the color with your finger. Sometimes the lip brush will leave streaky lines if you do not blend afterwords.
Dab off any excess with a tissue and you should be good to go!
What to Wear With Red Lips
Since red lips are quite the statement, it is sometimes challenging to decide what to wear with them or how to complete your makeup.
Typically, you want to wear little to no eye makeup and a simple and neutral outfit. Consider the blush you are wearing and be sure that the colors do not clash. For eye makeup, I used neutral matte eyeshadows from my Naked Basics palette.
Throughout my experience, I’ve found that red looks best with simple or black and white outfits.
